Cocaine increases risk of strokes in young people

The University of Maryland experts reveal that consumption of cocaine in adults can increase the risk of strokes six times, as it rapidly increases the blood pressure and results in cardiac problems. Moreover, cocaine when taken 24 hours before the stroke raised the risk to a higher extent. The drug in its crack form delivers worst results and users are eight times more prone to a stroke than those who do not use the drug at all.

Ischemic stroke is the most common

blockage in the blood

Scientists gathered data from 1992 to 2008 and analyzed one thousand cases in Washington, DC where people between 15 and 49 years suffered ischemic stroke due to using cocaine. Ischemic stroke causes blockage in the blood vessel because of deficiency of oxygen, thereby forming a clot. Study reveals that around 20 young people out of 100,000 suffer Ischemic stroke and African Americans are at a higher risk than Caucasians. Furthermore, 28 percent stroke victims revealed using cocaine during their lifetime whereas 26 people used cocaine before twenty hours of the stroke that raised the risk of stroke considerably. Additionally, 14 people stated to have used cocaine six hours before the stroke.

Study presents evidence not proof

Ischemic stroke

Dr. Kittner stated that study on cocaine however did not prove that cocaine causes stroke but is definitely strong evidence to show the same. Strokes in young people smoking cracks of cocaine lay evidence towards the increased risk and these findings of the study play an important role in clinical practice. However, in a journal stroke, using cocaine is not related with higher risk of strokes.

According to a new study, consumption of cocaine can increase the risk of strokes in young people. Every time they take the drug, six times the chances are to encounter a stroke.
