How to diagnose Anxiety Disorders in kids

It can be a very complicated task when diagnosing anxiety disorders in young children.  Children, when put in a different and uncomfortable situation, end up behaving quite differently than adults and might not be able to express their thoughts clearly as well.  A common form of anxiety, social anxiety, is something that is not quite easy to diagnose, even in adults thus leading to their misdiagnoses.

Issues of the mind, known amongst the general people, cannot be intercepted very well and this is the reason why young children do not get help at the same time.  However, fortunately, anxiety disorders can be treated quite successfully, but it is pertinent that the symptoms get recognised and the diagnoses commences at the earliest.  Hence, if you, as an adult, observe changes in the behavioural pattern of the child, then seek help immediately.

Stigma attached to illness of the brain

It is next to impossible for a parent to realise and accept that their child is going through a mental illness.  This is precisely the reason why diagnoses of a child having anxiety disorders becomes more difficult, or happens at a late stage.  In fact, anxiety disorders in children can remain undetected for years, which actually snowball the effect.

Another reason why the diagnoses are difficult when it comes to illnesses of the brain is its lack of appearance.  Anxiety disorder cannot be seen, whereas a physical handicap can be seen and people react accordingly.  At time, a mental disease is sometimes considered a personal inadequacy of the sufferer, which is unfair.

How parents can help in the diagnoses

If your child has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder, then ensure that your child’s activities are not limited and that he is given enough independence to do things by himself.  Do not intervene and try to help every once a while, as that leads to a feeling of inadequacy in the child and can enhance the problem.

Even though you might have worries, do not let that be evident in front of your child.  Be strong, motivating and provide your child with confidence.  If you take pride in your child, it will boost your child’s morale.

Summary:

There are various methodologies for treating anxiety disorders like cognitive behavioural therapy and medication that are considered to be sage and without any side effects.
