Is infant teething a cause of vomiting?

Teething is an arduous process for a baby. The process almost always comes with a number of common symptoms as well as a number of abnormal signs such as vomiting. It is vital to remember here that vomiting is not a normal symptom of teething though it may accompany the process. If you baby has been vomiting during teething, you may need to speak with your baby’s pediatrician. When typical signs of a healthy teething process accompany unusual ones like vomiting, you need to rule out the possibility of other health ailments in the child as well.

William Sears, M.D. and the author of “The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know about Your Child’s Health”, claims that saliva swallowing and saliva production is normally balanced in babies. Food digestion in babies is facilitated by saliva. When teething, babies produce more saliva which means that more saliva is also swallowed by them. This may result in presence of extra enzymes in your baby’s system which may lead to a stomach upset. Omitting or sickness could thus be a result of this overproduction.

Penelope Leach, PhD is of the view that seemingly teething-related symptoms are sometimes suspect. Symptoms like convulsions, vomiting, diarrhea and fever aren’t caused by the teething problem. If these symptoms persist, you may need to consult a doctor.

The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics recently featured a study with 125 healthy infants. Their parents were asked to record whether the babies displayed or didn’t display 18 noted symptoms. The study was inducted from the time the babies were 4 months old to the time they turned 1.

The study found that common symptoms of teething included wakefulness, decreased appetite, sucking, gum-rubbing, drooling and biting. The teething process itself did not include symptoms like vomiting, cough, stool looseness and congestion. The study thus concluded that babies may behave differently to what they normal do and may show signs of discomfort during the teething process.

Some babies may also go through the teething process without experiencing much discomfort or ill health. Normal symptoms of teething may also include interrupted sleep patterns, refusing food, biting behavior and fussiness and these are considered healthy signs. But the presence of illness, vomiting, diarrhea or fever may indicate a viral infection which may become exaggerated with the stress of teething if it isn’t treated in time.
