DIY tips to heal shin splints

Shin Splints are referred to as the pain occurring in the lower leg. It may happen inside the shinbone and outside as well. It usually affects people who are involved in physical activities such as athletics. Athletes are the primary victim of this disorder. The pain can be felt in lower part of the leg between knee and ankle if you are going through shin splints. This is caused due to repeated stress on the connective tissue present in the tibia. Overloading on the muscles can be another reason of the occurrence of shin splints. A sudden pressure on the bones and muscles can also engrave shin splints. Usage of uncomfortable footwear such as worn out shoes may also play a huge role in shin splints. The surface on which you walk, run or exercise can also create a good platform for shin splints. If this disorder is not treated as soon as possible, it may lead to breakage of bones in the later stages. Let us discuss few tips for curing shin splints.

Using Ice

You should use ice pack to roll on the part of the leg where you feel pain. You can diagnose shin splits by the appearance of your legs. It makes your legs look red and a swelling also occurs due to this. Try to rub ice rolled with cloth on the swollen part for a maximum 10 to 15 minutes.

Stretching Exercise

You can exercise stretching of your calf muscles to avoid shin splints. If you start exercising as soon as you feel the pain, there are fewer chances of shin splints to engrave. To stretch calf, get to toes pointed forward and move forward into half lunge. Bend your fore leg and keep your hind leg straight.

Taking Active Rest

Adequate amount of rest can reduce and heal pain. Taking active rest does not always suggest becoming inactive and sitting idle at one place. If you stop your minimal exercising, it may hamper you in the future when you start your exercise schedule again. You can go for the exercises, which put less stress on your muscles. These exercises may include elliptical trainer, stationary cycling, and swimming. You can also practise water running as it is very helpful in healing shin splints.

The healing of shin splints may depend on your age, fitness, and the response of your body towards the treatments you go through. You should not ignore this from the preliminary stage and take a proper care of it before the problem is engraved.
