Shimmy Your Way to Success

Shimmy Your Way to Success

Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes we think of more excuses than reasons to participate in it. Think you’re too busy to fit in a workout? Tired of the same route for your daily run? Bored of your usual elliptical stride in the gym? Are dumbbells and weight machines just not your cup of tea? Or is your exercise routine just in need of some spicing up?  Well, you can find your solution in one word: ZUMBA!

What Is Zumba?

Zumba is a dance-based cardio program that focuses on keeping your body moving regardless of your fitness capabilities. Zumba was created in the mid-‘90s by a gentleman, Alberto “Beto” Perez; his inspiration for the dance-based fitness routine stemmed from Latin music. So naturally, this program uses the up-beat Latin and International music to elevate your heart rate and guide you toward your exercise goals.  You can do Zumba by yourself or in a group based upon how you want to structure your workout. Zumba creates a great social network and support group for your fitness journey.

Where Can I Find a Zumba Class?

Zumba classes are  easily accessible to find near you, in a gym, local athletic club, or specific studios at numerous locations. If your schedule is packed or you don’t feel like leaving the house for some exercise, there is a variety of fitness DVDs and a Wii video game focused on Zumba dance routines with trained instructors. Also, there’s an abundant amount of videos on the Internet of different sequences that you can follow along to in the comfort of your own home.

Zumba also offers different programs for different age groups as well as for different fitness paths. There is Zumbatomic for children, Zumba Gold for seniors, Aqua Zumba, Zumba Toning (a resistance training program), and Zumba in the Circuit, found at Curves locations.

What Do I Bring to Zumba Class?

First off, wear clothes that are moveable and light. The fast-paced dance class heats up the room quickly, so also consider wearing layers or clothes you know you won’t overheat in. Secondly, invest in a pair of fitness shoes that you can wear comfortably but still are beneficial for your feet (in other words don’t wear the grubby, old lawn-mowing shoes). Worn-out soles or insoles may cause foot issues if used for an extended period of time. Lastly, bring a towel to pat dry sweat off of yourself during the 30 to 60 second breaks.

Tips for a Great Zumba Session

  1. Go at your own pace! So what if you can’t do the moves as sharply as the woman next to you, or the man in the front row isn’t sweating half as much as you are — everyone is at their own levels during a routine and focusing on progressing and getting better with each session is more important than comparing yourself to other people in the class. You can try keeping track of your own fitness levels and  just making sure you are increasing your activity level.
  2. Stay hydrated! While you’re busting a move and sweating, your body needs to replenish and refuel. Drinking water before, during and after a workout can help reduce cramps, muscle fatigue and dizziness. What may seem like a simple tip is often forgotten but can help boost your body to a better workout.
  3. Have fun! Regardless if you’ve had a bad day or just can’t get the moves right, a main objective of Zumba is to feel empowered — so focus on what you’re doing right and have a good time with it. Use this as a time to unwind and let go of your inhibitions for at least the duration of the workout and you’ll enjoy it more!
  4. Invite your friends and make new ones! Although you don’t have to do Zumba in a group-fitness environment, it’s highly recommended.  What better way to hangout with your friends than with an endorphin-releasing aerobic dance class? If you’re taking the initiative by yourself, Zumba classes have plenty of opportunities to make new friends. Either way, Zumba can be a great way to create a social network of other active people and a quality support group for any fitness journey.
