5 Signs of Addiction and What You Can Do About It

There are many different forms of addiction in the world today, and no matter what is controlling your life or your loved one’s life, it’s extremely important to seek help and choose an addiction treatment center as soon as possible. Addiction of many forms has been known to ruin relationships, negatively affect jobs, cause health issues, and could even result in fatality.

The most common problem with addiction is that nobody likes to admit that there’s a problem. Because of this, it’s up to you to familiarize yourself with the following five signs of addiction, and then understand what it is you can do to help.

Aside from finding treatment, it’s also very important that you support your loved one as they go through treatment. According to Adapt Programs, an addiction treatment facility in Houston, Texas, “Evidence-Based Practices help our treatment team provide the right care for your unique circumstances, but that does not ever replace the need for loving support”.

Like other addiction treatment centers, ADAPT can help people who suffer from addiction cure their disease and gain back control of their life. The very last thing your loved one needs is to have you turn your back on them. Instead, they need you to support them while they’re seeking treatment, and they also need you to support them when they’re done, as temptation will always be around.

1. Frequent Engagement of the Addiction

An addiction occurs when someone cannot control their desire. For example, when someone is addicted to alcohol, they will regularly consume alcohol and find ways to do so. If you or someone you love is constantly engaging in a certain activity, or constantly looking for ways to engage in a certain activity, this is a sign of addiction.

2. Increased Need

Once you or your loved one have become addicted to something, whether drugs, alcohol, or even gambling, you will find that the need for it increases. For example, if you’re an alcoholic, you may find that one or two drinks a night is no longer cutting it. Because of this, you up the amount you drink to three or four drinks a night, or you start drinking something harder in order to become buzzed or drunk. Your need for your drug of choice will continue until you seek treatment.

3. Disregard for Other Responsibilities

When you’re addicted to something, it’s all that you care about, and it’s all that you think about. You will start to put your addiction ahead of other responsibilities. For example, you may stop paying your mortgage so that you can use that money to pay for your addiction. You may stop participating in that softball league you loved so much because it gets in the way of your addiction. Or you may even find yourself wanting to partake in your addiction instead of spend time with your family.

4. Failure

Failure is another sign of addiction. If you are addicted to something, you may tell others that you can “quit at any time”. However, if you try and don’t succeed, you’re addicted. Failure also occurs in your goals and aspirations. For example, maybe you had a goal of earning your degree, but now that you became addicted to something, you dropped out of school. This is a failure, and it’s a sign of addiction.

5. Extreme Emotions

Having varying emotions and extreme levels is another sign of addiction. For example, people who suffer from addiction may find themselves experiencing bouts of rage, or depression, or even a lack of control. If you are suffering from withdrawal, you may also experience a flood of different emotions.

What can I do to help?

If you or someone you love is suffering from addiction, you need to seek treatment right away. There are plenty of treatment facilities out there designed for every type of addiction, so find the one that makes the most sense for the specific type. There are outpatient and inpatient facilities, so it’s best to determine which option is the right choice.
