Make your own vapor rub with this recipe

The common cold is a menace that affects almost everyone. One of the most commonly used medications for the problem is the vapor rub, which is easily available at the drug stores. However these may contain harmful ingredients such as petroleum and other products which may lengthen the infection.Here is for you an easy and natural way of making your own vapor rub at home.

Ingredients:

  • Grated beeswax – 4 tsp
  • Cocoa, sheer or mango butter – 3 tbsp
  • Coconut oil – 7 tbsp
  • High grade essential oil -60 drops.

(20 drops each of rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus or the vapor to be applied on nose, cheek bones and temples.)

Note: For children use 30 drops of the essential oil – eucalyptus smithii and tea tree 10 drops each and chamomile 5 drops.

  • Few essential oils that provide effective relief in congestion are as listed below.
Essential Oil Benefits
Thyme Antiseptic, enhances the immune functions. Shouldn’t be used in conditions like high blood pressure and more than 10 drops in a single batch.
Basil Antiseptic, clears the nasal passage
Rosemary Antiseptic. Should not be used by pregnant ladies.
Pine Treats cold and sinusitis, is a decongestant and inhibits microbial growth.
Lavender Antihistamine, antiseptic and safe for babies.
Clove Should not be used more than 2 drops and without consulting a professional.
Marjoram Eases the breathing.
Chamomile Provides relief from congestion and is safe for babies.
Lemon Increases the immune function.
Sweet Orange Has detoxifying properties

Commonly used essential oil combinations are –

  • Eucalyptus (20 drops), rosemary (10 drops), Lavender(10 drops), tea tree (10 drops) and lemon (10drops).
  • Rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus (10 drops each)
  • Rosemary, Peppermint and Eucalyptus (20 drops each)

Method:

  • Melt the entire beeswax and the butter using a double boiler.
  • When it melts completely take off from the heat and mix coconut oil and the essential oils.
  • Empty the entire content in a clean glass jar and close with an airtight lid. This can be preserved at room temperature for a period of twelve months.

The essential oils are very effective in providing relief from cough and cold. However, while making a vapor rub for children under age two, eucalyptus oil should be used when the child turns 2 months old and tea tree when the child turns 6 months old.

Summary
